The waves washed over his head. The water’s encompassed his body and yet, they pulled him down, or at least tried to do so. His eyes snapped open and the young man began to struggle against the tides. Involuntarily, he gasped, thus his lungs were bombarded by the salty liquid.

Blissfully, his head bobbed up above the crest of the water. Instinctively, he sputtered and began to paddle towards what he hoped was the shore. He had to keep stopping. He was tiring out quickly and his lungs burned from being deprived of oxygen. In the glaring sun, his blonde hair shined and so did his wet face. Just as he thought that he thought he would not be able to go on and that his arms had turned to lead, he found himself mere feet from the beach. Taking in as deep of breath as he was able, he forced himself to make the last leg of the swim.

Reaching the shoreline, he grasped at the sand and crawled wearily up onto the beach. Out of the water, Charlie Pace, rolled onto his back and laid there panting and trying to draw in air. He closed his eyes and just laid there, numbness creeping into him. He was alive. He hadn’t been, and now, he was.

Laying there in the sand, he listened to the waves crash over the reefs as well as the gulls cawing overhead. Charlie felt sun rays beat down on his face and could even see some of the light as it filtered through his close lids. He was aware of his chest, raising and lowering erratically and he was aware of his heartbeat (it was fast) as well as he was aware he was shaking uncontrollably out of shock of his rebirth.

~*~*~*~

Miles Strom was sitting on a hill, looking out at the water’s. But he was not focused on the waves. The blues, greens, grays, browns, and whites all blended together so that there was nothing distinct. His mind had drifted off.

He was thinking about what he would do here. He did not have many skills. Miles’s main purpose for being here was to talk to those who had passed away. Now, those people (save a few) were alive and could answer anyone’s questions. His job was mute.

“What am I gonna do?” he said to no one in particular. Miles was not even sure if anyone was around to hear him. He did not care. “I gotta do something. I sure can’t do what I was. Maybe I should try leaving the island,” Miles mused, with a slow nod.

~*~*~*~

He leaned against a tree trunk with his back to the forest. His head back and his eyes were at half-mast, though he was not asleep. Clasped tightly in one of his hand was his leather notebooks. Daniel Faraday was thinking about only one thing - a person (Charlotte Lewis). He couldn’t help wonder if she had been brought back to life and if she had, where had she gone. If she hadn’t come back to life, he couldn’t help but wonder where her body had been placed. It was all too confusing.

Wearily, he sighed. “Oh, what happened,” he moaned weakly, “Why did you have to go?” He shook his head slowly as his hands wrapped a little tighter around his notebook. “I wish you would come back,” he whispered, unaware that there was someone special in the forest behind him.

John Locke

John was frazzled as he plodded through the jungle. He’d been plagued in the night by strange dreams. No. Not dreams, he reminded himself. Visions. Consequently, he hadn’t slept well and, physically, he wasn’t functioning very well. Some could argue that, mentally, he wasn’t functioning very well either, but to him everything was crystal clear.

The Vision
John awoke with a start in the jungle, lying on the ground. He sat up and looked around. Before he could wonder how he got there, someone spoke.

“Hello, John.”

John looked up, startled slightly by the voice. He was even more unnerved by the grinning, chiseled face that greeted him.

“Boone?”

Boone’s smile broadened as John stared at him, wide-eyed and open-mouthed.

“What’s the matter, John?” Boone asked, his tone light and almost playful. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Boone crouched down beside John, his elbows resting on his knees, hands dangling between his legs. A million questions occurred to John, but before he could ask any, he heard an unbelievably loud noise. He covered his ears and grimaced while Boone remained crouched, calm and grinning. John couldn’t see how he could remain so poised. It sounded as if the sky itself was being ripped apart above their heads.

And then came the crash, an awful sound of metal on metal, the ground taking a hit.

“WHAT THE HELL?”

John knew he said it, could feel his lips moving and his vocal chords working, but he couldn’t hear his own yell over the sound. And then, all at once, the sound stopped.

“It’s the crash, John,” Boone said, his voice casual. “But you can’t worry about that. You can’t save them.”

Boone stood and brushed off his khaki pants. He turned to John and shrugged.

“You can’t save me,” he said with certainty and acceptance. “It’s too late for that…”

John blinked and was startled to feel rain pounding down on him, cold and icy. He scrambled to his feet, gasping from the sudden sensation.

“But the rest of them,” Boone continued, his voice a bit louder to compensate for the pounding rain. “Everyone else who died after me… They’re coming back, John. The Island is bringing them back.”

John stared at him in utter confusion. It was all so much to take in so fast, he was having trouble keeping up.

“They’re being given a second chance,” Boone continued. “A purpose. They all have a purpose, John.”

John opened his mouth to speak, but he heard someone very close moving through the foliage behind him. He turned and backed away, startled to see Shannon. She ran past them frantically, her clothing drenched.

“Walt!” she yelled. “WALT!”

John winced when he heard the gunshot, closing his eyes instinctively.

“You can save her, John,” Boone said. “You’re supposed to save her. All of them. Put them on the right path…”

When John opened his eyes the rain had stopped and they were standing on the beach. The only sounds were the wind and the crashing waves. He looked up at Boone, who stood beside him, watching the waves.

“What are we doing here?” he asked.

Boone pointed out at the water and nodded his head. John followed his gaze and saw Charlie. He was standing on the shoreline, where the water met the sand. He was soaked and dripping, his expression solemn.

“He’s next, John.”

Locke tore his gaze away from Charlie and looked at Boone, who was staring back at him.

“Make sure you’re ready…”

When John awoke – really awoke – from this odd journey, he knew what he was meant to do.

He had to get to the beach.

So, here he was, plodding through the jungle and retracing steps he hadn’t taken since the shift, until he came to the beach. He stayed at the treeline and watched, waiting for something. Anything.

Just when he thought he’d wasted his time, gotten it wrong once again, Charlie came tumbling out of the ocean.

Charlotte Lewis

When Charlotte awoke, she was lying on the ground somewhere in the jungle. Her head was aching and she couldn’t remember where she was or how she’d gotten there. She sat up, fearing she might have a concussion or some sort of head injury. She remembered her name and her occupation, which was a good sign. As she stood and started walking through the jungle, her head began to clear. Bit by bit, her memories returned, like pieces of a puzzle fitting together.

She remembered her childhood with the DHARMA Initiative, and she stopped suddenly as she realized where she was.

“The Island,” she whispered.

Immediately she smiled, even laughed – a small, surprised chuckle. She’d found the Island. She’d arrived. But how?

She strained her memory further as she continued to wander through the jungle in a bit of a daze, lost in her own thoughts. She remembered something startling – a man approaching her when she was a little girl and telling her something bad was going to happen. At the time the man had been a stranger.

Now she knew him well.

“Daniel,” she said.

As if his name were the key to unlock her mind, all her memories flooded back at once. Her childhood, her life, Anthropology, Miles, Naomi, the freighter…

She became overwhelmingly dizzy and her head began to throb again, just a little at first, but it steadily increased until the pain became unbearable. And still the memories continued, jumbled and scattered. All the while she continued to stumble through the jungle, clutching her head.

And then one memory came, clearer than any of the others. As if the universe knew that this one was extraordinarily important, the pain ceased and the flood of thoughts and images stopped as this one incident replayed itself in her mind.

Charlotte collapsed on the ground, blood flowing from her nose, her mind becoming more and more jumbled with every passing moment. Daniel sat beside her and stroked her hair. She told him about her childhood.

“…When I got back to England, I would ask my mum about this place, but she would say that it wasn’t real, and that I’d made it up,” she told Daniel. “That’s why I became an anthropologist. To find this island again. It’s what I’ve been searching for my whole life.”

Confused, Daniel asked why she was telling him this.

“Because I remember something now,” she said. “When I was little, living here, there was this man, this crazy man. He really scared me. And he told me that I had to leave the island and never ever come back. He told me that if I came back to the island, I would die… Daniel, I think that man was you.”

And then her mind went foggy again, and she was a little girl, talking to some crazy man who told her to leave the island.

“Not allowed to eat chocolate before dinner…” she told him, smiling.

“Daniel,” Charlotte whispered again, with clarity, her eyes wide and filling with tears.

She died on this island. She clearly remembered feeling herself drifting… and then… What? What had happened then?

“I woke up here,” she said to herself in both amazement and disbelief.

And then the pain came back in an overwhelming wave that made her stomach turn. Her head suddenly felt as if it were splitting open and she cried out, falling to the ground, feeling the blood begin to flow from her nose.

No, she thought between the pain. Not again. You can’t bring me back only to do it again!

One word escaped her lips as she lay on the ground.

“DANIEL!”

And then her body began to convulse.

Violet felt something strange was happening. It was a strange sensation in her chest, and it began with that blinding light in the sky. The feeling was familiar, but it was hard to think about. The last time she felt something like this was when Walt was here. Walt...her best friend on the island. After the Others had taken him, she never saw him again, but she couldn't deny the strange connection they had, and she definitely couldn't deny that something from him had passed on to her, a new ability to sense things that she had never had before.

It was happening now, as she wandered through the jungle. She was on the beach only hours ago, but had decided to go for a walk, because that Miles guy was sitting alone, bobbing his head back and forth with eyes closed, and it kind of freaked Violet out a little.

Although now, she thought wandering through the jungle with this strange sensation washing over her was worse. She couldn't explain what it felt like, it was like...a presence almost, one that wasn't there before.

Violet's heart began hammering hard against her chest and she felt sick to her stomach as she thought she heard whispering all around her. She swallowed hard, and decided the beach might not be so bad after all.

But as she turned to run back toward the beach, she ran into someone and let out a scream.

"Hey, calm down Violet, what's the matter?" Violet quickly breathed out and realized she had run into Juliet. Violet swallowed - she still didn't trust Juliet, not after everything the Others had done to their people.

Before Violet could answer her, they heard a woman's shriek coming from not too far away.

"DANIEL!"

Juliet left Violet and began running toward the troubled cries, and Violet, not wanting to be left alone, chased after her, fearing what they would find.

What they found was heart-stopping, and too shocking for words. Violet immediately understood what that feeling was, as she stared at the convulsing body of Charlotte Lewis.

Because Charlotte Lewis was supposed to be dead.

It was then that Violet passed out.

This wasn't the first time Sydney had been greeted with something unexpectedly strange when leaving her tent, and she doubted it would be the last, on this island. That said, she was still surprised when she just happened to see Locke come barreling out of the jungle. Her eyebrows narrowed as she threw on the light sweater she'd had in her arms when she'd come out into the morning.. The hell was he doing here? Hadn't he thrown his lot in with the Others? If he had, why was he back on the beach? Not wasting any time standing around and trying to figure it out on her own, she started towards him.

Best way to find out what he's doing here, Sydney thought, would be to ask. Of course, John's a shifty bloke. Fact. And so are the Others, which, I guess, he's one of now. So I guess I've got about as good a chance of getting a straight answer from him as I do of sprouting wings and flying back to New York. John, she noticed, seemed to be looking around for something, in the direction of the water. She looked over. She didn't see anything. Her brisk walk turned into a jog, just as John seemed to find what he was looking for and started towards it.

She was within yelling distance. "Locke!" Either he didn't hear her, or he just didn't care to answer. The man continued down the beach towards the water, and as Sydney tried to figure out what he was headed for, this time she was close enough to spot the figure dropping, exhausted, to the sand. Charlie. A chill went down Sydney's spine, but she didn't stop moving. Rather, she actually ran faster towards him. Once-dead survivors had been popping up all over the place since that flash in the sky. Sydney didn't know what the hell was going on; Daniel had spoken of some crazy time travel thing.

Some of the survivors who hadn't died and come back were losing it a little bit over it, and while it was definitely something crazy, Sydney chose to look at it as a good thing. These people were getting a second chance at life, and Charlie, who'd died trying to help them all get off the island, deserved a second chance more than anyone. As she reached him, Sydney crouched down and leaned over him. She grabbed his face, and spoke clearly and calmly. "Charlie. You alright, mate!?" John was already there, having gotten to the man before she had. She gave him an upward glance. Just because Charlie had washed up on the beach didn't mean she couldn't do what she'd intended to do at the same time she was helping the Brit out. "What are you doing here, Locke?"

John Locke

When he saw Charlie collapse on the shore, John knew he was on the right path. This island was a place of rebirth for all of them. A gift, whether one chose to realize it or not. He had always believed that, from the moment the island gave him back his legs.

Why shouldn’t it be able to bring people back to life? He’d seen Daniel, and Juliet, as well as a few other people he was certain had been dead before the time shift. He didn’t know how or why this was happening, but there were always a lot of unanswered questions in this place. He’d gotten used to it and, although it frustrated him sometimes, John had learned to have faith in the island. If he just followed its instructions, bent to its will, it would always bring him to where he was supposed to be.

And right now he was supposed to be here, on the beach, with Charlie.

The Island has given him a second chance, he thought.

He was running before he even realized it, racing down the beach, across the sand toward Charlie. He vaguely heard someone calling his name, but he couldn’t bother with that now. The important thing was Charlie. Anything else could wait a few minutes.

John kneeled beside the coughing, sputtering man.

“Charlie,” he said, raising his voice to be heard over the crashing waves. “Charlie, are you alright? Can you hear me?”

Locke stood suddenly as someone else crouched down next to him. The woman’s name was Sydney. She held Charlie’s face in her hands.

“Charlie. You alright, mate!?” she said.

Then she turned to John.

“What are you doing here, Locke?”

John looked down at Charlie, then back to Sydney.

“The same thing you’re doing,” he said. “Trying to help Charlie.”

Shannon Rutherford

With all the terrible things that had happened on the island, with all the confusion, Shannon hadn’t been in the best shape. Being told you were dead and everyone else was a time traveler could have that effect on anyone.

She’d spent a lot of time sleeping in her tent. Grieving. Feeling sorry for herself. Being angry. Alone. Abandoned.

You’re behaving like a child, she told herself every morning, or afternoon, when she awoke.

But that never caused her to break her pattern.

And then she’d had the strangest dream. She couldn’t remember much of it once she woke up. She’d been in the jungle, running. It had been raining, and she could almost feel the cold water soaking through her clothes. She saw Walt and Sayid, but it was all a blur of panic and fear. And then there’d been a loud noise, sudden and quick. Pain in her chest…

And then she’d woken up.

She couldn’t be certain, but she thought it might have been a memory… or maybe it was called a premonition if it technically hadn’t happened yet. After what Miles had told her – that she’d been shot in the jungle – it was a possibility. It was also possible that she’d made it up after hearing that.

That day she’d decided not to try to be useful. It wasn’t laziness or indifference. It was a conscious choice. She took the ratty airplane blanket she’d been using as her tent floor and dragged it out onto the beach. It was a hot, sunny day – which was typical. Since she didn’t have her bikini handy, she stripped down to her bra and underwear and lie down on the blanket, like she was working on her tan. Like coming here had been a choice.

Maybe she could delude herself into believing she wanted to be here.

She’d dozed off again, stirring when she heard yelling. She opened one eye, putting a hand to her forehead like a visor to block out the sun. She saw Sydney first, running down the beach.

“What the hell…?”

And then Sydney stopped and crouched down and she saw Locke stand up. Shannon sat up straight, her brain suddenly alert, although her body was still tired.

What the hell is that bastard doing here?

Shannon had been wearing a pair of her own denim shorts and a man’s white button-up t-shirt. They sat in a neatly folded pile weighed down by her flip-flops. She stood and pulled on her shorts quickly. Then she pulled on the shirt and began fumbling with the buttons. She sighed, exasperated, and gave up. Instead, she tied the two sides into a knot above her stomach, left her sandals on the blanket, and started toward everyone else.

Daniel and Miles came into view as she got closer. She reached Miles first and stopped, standing behind him, still looking out at Locke and Sydney.

“What’s going on?” she asked. “What’s he doing here?”

Blinding pain ripped through his skull. He reached up with both hands and pressed against his temples. Miles Strom swallowed hard as bile rose in the back of his throat. He leaned forward as a moan escaped his lips. “Oh, what’s f-ing’s going on?” he hissed, closing his eyes and trying to will the migraine to subside. His stomach churned. Sweat formed on his pasty face. He licked his lips as more bile rose.

Knowing what was coming next, he maneuvered himself on his hands and knees. Just as he did, he stomach heaved. His breakfast of mango and pineapple came up all at once. Spiting the last of the bile out of his mouth, he found himself feeling better – as he always did. The pain in his head was now just a dull ache and his stomach was growling. It always happened that way. After releasing the nausea, he was starving and the migraine would be nearly gone.

“What was with that,” he muttered. Usually, he only got this bad of a migraine when he was near a departed’s soul. But, most of the people who were dead had come back to life. Standing up, he surveyed the area. People were running to the water’s edge. One was John Locke. The other he didn’t know. Miles stared at where they had stopped. A frown formed and he tapped his foot in the sand. “That’s why,” he said to no one in particular.

Miles jumped when he heard someone behind him. “Geez, don’t do that,” Miles grumbled as he turned and looked at Shannon, “Listen, don’t be mad at Locke. It’s not his fault that Boone’s dead. Don’t argue with me about it either. I can hear it in your voice. Boone would’ve gone in whether Locke was there or not to get you off this island. Which is something I’d like to do. Got nothing left to do here. My jobs done.” The last part was said under his breath. He hoped that Shannon hadn’t heard because he wasn’t sure how he’d do it or if he really could leave.

“I don’t know why he’d here. But, he’s got a good reason I’ll wager. Another of you came back to life,” he told her. Miles scrunched his eyes together tightly as he tried to remember the name of him. “Some guy named Charlie. He drowned and was thinking ‘Not Penny’s boat’. No idea what that means though.”

~*~*~

Daniel had come up to Mile’s side just as Shannon had gotten there. He only half listened to what Miles had to say. Daniel found himself preoccupied. He also felt quite uneasy. Every fiber of his being was taught as if he were preparing for something. What that was, he didn’t know. “People coming back to life,” he muttered, “Woah.” Slowly, Daniel shook his head. “Unbelievable…”

The man cocked his head to one side and then the other. His brow was furrowed. Confusion glinted in his deep chocolate eyes. In his chest, his heart beat madly. Nervously, Daniel Faraday raked a hand through his dark hair as he turned around slightly. Something was going on or was happening. He was sure of it and it scared him. In his panic, he didn’t notice the queer look Miles was giving him. He didn’t notice Shannon and what was happening at the shoreline was a blur.

He stopped and faced the forest. His heart pounded even harder than before. Daniel hadn’t been in there since Charlotte’s death. This was his first time back. “Hey, you OK,” Daniel heard Miles ask, “You don’t look too good.”

“I’ll be back. I’m fine,” Daniel mumbled. He marched into the forest without looking back. Hearing his name echoing through the woods, he ran as fast as he could. He stopped when he was in a clearing. And then he saw her. He saw nothing but the woman he thought he had lost forever. Tears fell down his face as he rushed to her side. In a fluid motion he fell to his knees beside her. With one hand, he took hers. With the other, he touched her face. Helplessly, he watched her as she seized.

“Charlotte,” he whispered, “Charlotte, it’s me. It’s Daniel. Oh, please don’t leave me again. Please. It’ll be OK. This’ll pass. It has to. I-I seized when I came back. But, I acclimated, I think. You need to. Just go with everything. Don’t think about anything. Just focus on me.” He squeezed his eyes closed and rocked slightly.

He looked up suddenly. He had felt as if he was not alone and Daniel found that to be the truth. In front of him was Juliet Burke and someone else – someone he didn’t know. Slowly, he nodded to Juliet and smiled shyly. Then, he looked down at Charlotte. “I can’t lose her again,” Daniel said.

~*~*~

Charlie couldn’t stop shaking, even though the sun was beating down on him. He was freezing. He was terrified. He had no idea what had happened. The last thing he remembered was being surrounded by water. It had pressed against his body and made him feel like he were in a vice. He didn’t think he should be here after that event. Subconsciously, he knew he shouldn’t be back. But, here he was.

Nothing made any since. He thought he heard talking, but wasn’t sure who it was and the voices seemed muffled and distant. Mostly, he heard the roar of water just as it had in the underground station. It didn’t make any since though because he wasn’t under the sea any more. Dimly, he was aware it was just the after affects of the event. Trying to rid his ears of any left over water and control the blasted ringing, he aimlessly shook his head from side to side in a listless fashion. It worked. The roaring sound was gone and the voices were too loud and made him wince.

Focus, he reminded himself, shaking his head again. He had drifted off without realizing it and without answering the questions. Gotta focus, Charlie chided himself.

He jerked when someone abruptly grabbed him. His green-blue eyes snap open and he looked around in panic. “Do I know you,” he rasped. Charlie tried to focus on the face in front of him. But, he couldn’t, instead her face swam in front of him. He felt as if he might pass out any second. “I don’t know,” he mumbled. His voice was barely above a whisper and he doubted that the woman could hear him.

His eyes flutter closed and his head falls to one side. Hearing a very familiar voice, he open them again to mere slits. “Yeah, I can. You’re too loud. So is she,” he whispered. Slowly, he shook his head. “I think I’m gonna be sick.” Wearily, he rolled over. All the contents (mostly salt water) poured out of him. With the last of it, he gagged and coughed. Charlie found himself with a throbbing headache and a longing he hadn’t had since the first few days on the island, but he knew he couldn’t and he didn’t want to start again.

He just wanted to feel better. He still shook and his legs started to ache as the muscles contracted painfully. His heart was still racing and Charlie didn’t know how to calm it down. “John, what’s wrong with me?” he suddenly asked. Panic flooded his voice.

“The same thing you’re doing. Trying to help Charlie.”

Leave it to John Locke to dance around and say something cryptically philosophical rather than just answer the damn question. Sydney frowned. He seemed to have come out on the beach specifically looking for something. He'd heard Charlie call out on the beach from where he was in the jungle, or so she assumed, but he hadn't explained why he was so close to their camp to start with. She glared at him quickly before turning back to Charlie. This could be discussed with John later, after they made sure Charlie was all right. Or rather, this would be discussed with John later.

When he spoke, she had a hard time understanding what he said. He looked confused, and didn't seem to recognize her. "It's Sydney," she told him. Resurrection, when combined with nearly drowning, apparently left one somewhat fuzzy for the first few minutes, at least. Unsurprising. She didn't know from experience, but she figured either one was probably bad enough on its own. Charlie kept mumbling, incoherently for the most part, until he actually got to the point where he could answer John's question. He could indeed hear them. But they were being too loud. Sydney winced. Oops. She'd have to try to keep it down.

...And then he rolled over and threw up. She supposed that was to be expected. At least he'd rolled away from, and not towards her. Definitely a plus. "Cough it up, Charlie," Sydney encouraged him, as quietly as possible. Panicked, Charlie asked John what was happening to him. She looked at John knowingly. They were both aware of what had happened to Charlie - he'd died. With just a hint of a pleased little smile, Sydney remained silent and continued to look at John. He'd shown up on their beach, uninvited and unannounced, after leaving them for the Others, avoiding her questions and claiming he wanted to help Charlie? Fine, John, Sydney thought. You can help Charlie all you want. Charlie wants to know what's wrong with him, you can be the one who gets to have the "you died" discussion and explain that little mess.

She, meanwhile, would keep a lookout for any opportunity that arose for her to step in and ask him again what exactly he was doing here. They didn't go tromping into the Others' home on this island. At least, not anymore. And really, the few that had gone into Other territory had only done it a couple times. There was also the fact that they didn't know where the Others were anymore, but still. The two groups weren't exactly the best of pals, and mutual avoidance seemed like the best policy, if they were going to keep sharing this rock. Of course, John wasn't exactly one for following policy and rules.

Shannon Rutherford

Shannon frowned, a startled expression on her face as Miles replied.

“Listen, don’t be mad at Locke. It’s not his fault that Boone’s dead. Don’t argue with me about it either,” he continued as she opened her mouth to speak. “I can hear it in your voice. Boone would’ve gone in whether Locke was there or not to get you off this island.”

He muttered something else, but Shannon couldn’t quite hear it. Something about his job being done.

Well, boo-frickin’-hoo, she thought.

To say she wasn’t too thrilled with Miles at this very moment would be an understatement. No one talked to her like that… Not anymore.

He told her what was happening, but she only half-heard him, still focusing on what he’d said before.

She forced a smile and her tone was sarcastically cheerful and pleasant when she spoke.

“Well, I’ll make sure to up and die soon, then,” she said. “And, hey! Maybe I can murder a few more people and help you out. Would that make life easier for you?”

Her smile dissolved quickly and she glared at him.

“Don’t tell me how to feel, and don’t you dare tell me what Boone would or wouldn’t do. You. Don’t. Know. Him.” She said that last part through gritted teeth.

She’d noticed Daniel approach, but had been too busy being offended to pay him any attention. He looked a little out of it… Then again, that was sort of how he always looked.

Shannon turned and started to walk away and wrinkled her nose as she stepped over the pile of vomit lying in the sand.

“Ew,” she muttered.

She watched Locke and Sydney as she walked slowly toward them. And then what Miles had told her while she was throwing her little hissy-fit came back to her and her eyes widened.

“Oh my God… Charlie?"

She stood there, dumbfounded, for a moment, not sure what she should do. She could go and offer to help, but it wasn’t like she could do much anyway. Plus, she didn’t want to be anywhere near Locke.

Charlotte Lewis

Everything was a blur of pain, noise, and color as Charlotte lay on the ground seizing. Millions of thoughts whirred through her head.

What’s happening? Who is that? Chocolate before dinner. Daniel. Mummy says I made it up. Never go back. The island. Whose hand is that…?

She heard someone speaking, but it was difficult to concentrate on the voice with everything that was happening in her head and to her body. Tears streamed down Charlotte’s face. She was afraid.

“…Oh, please don’t leave me again…”

She wasn’t aware of whether the voice was coming from her own mind – a memory – or from somewhere outside of her.

“…I came back. But, I acclimated…”

Never go back. The island. Mummy says I made it up…

“…Don’t think about anything. Just focus on me…”

Daniel. It was Daniel’s voice she was hearing. She didn’t know where it was coming from, but she listened. Painfully, she tried to stop the flow of thoughts, going round and round like a spinning top. Dizzying and constant. It hurt to stop them, not only her head, but her entire body screaming in pain. She tried to focus on the hand gripping hers, the familiar voice, the ground beneath her.

After a moment, the seizing began to slow down and her mind became clearer.

“I can’t lose her again,” she heard him say.

And then her body stopped convulsing.

Immediately, she felt tired. Every inch of her body ached and she felt so incredibly tired. She could’ve curled up and gone to sleep right then and there if there weren’t several people staring down at her to consider. Her eyes rolled lazily from one face to another. Juliet, a little girl, Daniel.

“Daniel…” she said slowly, her words slightly slurred. “Am… are we dead?”

John Locke

John didn’t expect to get a pleasant response from Sydney when he answered. But, he could waste time and explain he’d had a vision – which he suspected wouldn’t go over very well at all – or, he could give her the simple need-to-know answer and get this guy some help.

John leaned in close to listen, but he couldn’t hear Charlie over the waves. And then the man rolled over and vomited. John looked down at him, his mind working quickly. His first instinct was to get him away from the water.

“John, what’s wrong with me?” Charlie asked.

John could hear the panic in the young man’s voice. He looked at Sydney, who was looking right back at him. They both knew what was wrong with him, but how were they to explain it without panicking him further? Sydney smirked and remained silent. Clearly, she was content to let John stumble through that explanation. John sighed.

“I’ll explain what I can in a minute, Charlie,” he assured him, his voice calm and rational. “Right now, we have to get you onto the beach before this tide pulls you back out again. Can you stand?”

John reached a hand down to Charlie.

"Help me get him to safety!" John called to no one in particular.

Shannon Rutherford

Shannon felt stupid just standing there, but she wasn't good with this type of thing. She wasn't the type to run in and try to save everyone... at least, she didn't think she was. If she'd remembered what she'd been doing just before she died, maybe she would've felt differently.

Boone was always good in a crisis. He'd jump right in - cool, calm, and collected - and do whatever he had to. He'd always had so much focus in situations like that.

You're completely useless...

He wasn't the only one to ever tell her that. His mother had said it several times. She was pretty sure every guy she'd ever dated had said it. Except Sayid. He was another one who was good at the whole emergency thing. And Jack.

Dammit, where the hell ARE you? she thought.

Because none of them were here now. There was no one to take care of things...

"Help me get him to safety!" Locke called.

Shannon's head snapped up. The urgency in his voice had stirred her from her thoughts. She looked quickly from Locke to Miles...

Where'd Daniel go?

...to her tent. It was close. Not conveniently close, but close enough.

Go.

Shannon ran over to John and Sydney, getting a better look at Charlie as she approached...

What the hell am I doing...

"Wow. You look like crap," she said, before she could stop herself.

She glanced at John, but it was Sydney she spoke to. She could help Charlie without talking to the guy who killed her brother.

"My tent's close," she said. "Maybe we could..."

She trailed off and shrugged.

((sorry this is really long. I got a lot of people here now lol.))

Violet felt consciousness returning to her a few moments later, but nobody had really noticed she had passed out to begin with. Juliet was too busy checking on Charlotte, making sure she wasn't dead, no doubt. Charlotte had screamed out Daniel's name, that much she remembered.

Struggling to stand up, she felt dizziness take over, and her whole head swam. She felt sick to her stomach as she made her way over to Juliet, who was still holding Charlotte's arms to keep her from shaking so hard.

"You okay?" Juliet asked sideways to Violet. Clearly she knew Violet had passed out. Violet breathed out.

"Yeah, I'm fine, no thanks to you." She replied in a snotty voice. Juliet gave her one glare.

"I think Charlotte's a bit of a higher priority." Juliet looked back at Charlotte, and then at Violet again. "Will you help me hold her down so I can check her pulse?"

Violet did as she was told, but it was harder than she thought it would be. Even though Charlotte was unconscious, her convulsing was strong and Violet struggled to keep her down.

As Juliet checked her pulse, Violet heard fast footsteps approaching. Not sure if the Others were even still around, she felt her heart hammering, until she turned and realized it was Daniel Faraday. Violet swallowed. How would he react? This woman was the woman he loved, before she died. And now here she was, but would she die again?

Violet let go of Charlotte when Juliet told her to, and the two backed up while Daniel attended to Charlotte. He muttered something incoherently to her, and then turned to Juliet.

"I can't lose her again." He had said.

Violet felt sick to her stomach when she heard those words. As she watched Daniel with Charlotte, Violet couldn't help but wonder...if people were coming back to life, would her sister be somewhere on this island? Her sister had died in the plane, her sister, her guardian, her best friend. She swallowed, pushing that thought aside.

It was then that Charlotte came back to consciousness. Her body stopped convulsing and she stared at Daniel with weak eyes. Violet hoped she wouldn't die again, she didn't think poor Daniel would be able to handle it. He hadn't done so well the first time.

"Daniel, are we dead?" Charlotte asked. Violet paused, wondering how Daniel was going to get out of this one. Violet turned to Juliet.

"What's wrong with her?" She asked quietly. "Why was her body shaking like that?" She didn't want to talk to Juliet, but she knew Juliet was a doctor. Maybe she'd know what was wrong, and if she did, maybe she could help her.

"No idea. It's very similar to the symptoms she was exhibiting the first time these flashes began and she passed away from the temporal displacement. Maybe she's just having a latent reaction." Juliet replied. Violet didn't know, but she knew it wasn't good. And even if Charlotte was okay, how would they explain to her that she came back to life?

“Sydney…” Charlie muttered, “Isn’t that where we came from before the crash?” He furrowed his brow as the word ‘Sydney’ echoed through his name. He knew he knew the name other than because of the Australian city, but he wasn’t sure how he knew it. The young man reached up and rubbed his forehead. Then, he regretted it. Every muscle in his arm protested with the vengeance of a hungry shark. It made him pull his arm to his chest and wince.

Hearing the instruction, he rolled back onto his side the best he was able (which wasn’t all that far) and coughed. A little more salt water came into his mouth and he spat it out. Feeling depleted of everything (including energy) as well as a gnawing hunger, he lay back down in the sand. He closed his eyes and tried to calm his nerves, tried to calm his heart, tried to calm his shaking muscles. But he couldn’t. His brow furrowed deeper in confusion and fear and he closed his eyes – hoping that the use of less of his senses would calm him down, but it was not working. No one was telling him anything and that scared him.

Hearing someone speak – someone very familiar to him – Charlie’s eyes snapped open. “Shannon,” he whispered. His tone conveyed his confusion. What the bloody is going on? She died, Charlie thought as he dozed off.

Hearing John Locke’s voice, he opened his eyes and focused on him the best he could. He wanted to know what had happened. Not knowing scared him. The avoidance of answering terrified him. It meant something bad had happened. “You better,” he said in a quivering voice.

Charlie then rolled his eyes. “Geez, Locke, do we have to? I thought I’d go for another swim,” he said. He was more than ready to get away from the water. “I-I think so,” he said, taking hold of Locke’s hand.

He did stand. But, he was having trouble keeping his footing and thus leaned on John with most of his weight to keep himself up right.

He looked at Shannon and his eyebrow rose. “Nice to see you too, Shannon,” he said meekly. At the suggestion of the tent, he nodded. “Sounds great.”

~*~*~

Miles stared out at the ocean. The young man couldn’t look at Charlie laying there. He was starting to find it creepy to see everyone he knew that had died walking around the island, quite a live, albeit a little confused. None of this felt right. He didn’t feel like he belonged.

“That wasn’t my point,” Miles growled. His eyes glittering. “I don’t want to see you die again! I don’t want any of you guys to die. I don’t like staying around where I’m not needed. I never did. After a job’s, I move on. This job Is obviously done.”

He shook his head. “I know him better than you will ever know him. He always protected you from the day your father married his mother. He climbed into the airplane to save you and get you off this island. He hated seeing you hurt by those men. He was proud of you teaching ballet and wanted you to take the money for the schooling. Do you want me to go on?” Miles asked. He raised an eyebrow as he watched her walk away.

~*~*~

Daniel held tight to Charlotte’s hand. He kept his eyes closed as he sat there rocking and stroking her hand with his thumb. “It’ll be all right. It has to be,” he said. His voice quaked slightly, but the tone was firm, “Just stay calm. Don’t let yourself get lost in the thoughts of the past. Stay in the moment. You can do it.”

Dan leaned his head back, but did not open his eyes. “Please, don’t take her again,” he whispered, “Please, Charlotte don’t leave again. You’ve got a second chance.” He lowered his head and opened his eyes.
Seeing the tear, he reached with the other hand and wiped the tears away. “Don’t cry. It’ll be OK,” Dan said in a soft voice, “It’s OK.”

Seeing her lay still, Daniels eyes widen. He leaned forward as a laugh escaped his lips. The laughter turned to a sob. “Oh, Charlotte,” he whispered, looking up at the sky again. Sighing, he shook his head. “No, we’re not dead. At least, not anymore,” he told her, “How are you feeling? Headache? Dizziness?”

He looked over his shoulder at Violet and Juliet. “Her body had to acclimate to this time frame. Mine did that too when we went back,” he explained, “She was bombarded by too much information all at once and…and it just had to settle. She should be OK now…”

Violet puckered her brow.

Her body had to acclimate to this time frame. Daniel had said. What in the heck did 'acclimate' mean? Violet was sure Juliet understood, but sometimes, Violet wondered if people forgot she was still only 16 years old. She did decently in school, but she was no genius.

Daniel's shoulders stopped shaking and he seemed to calm down again. Charlotte seemed to be doing much better too.

Stealing a glance at Juliet, who was only watching distantly, as though waiting for the moment when a medical hand was needed, Violet cleared her throat.

"Um, Daniel? Do you need anything?" She wanted to know. Honestly, running back toward the beach wouldn't be the worst thing right now. Talking to someone who had been dead not that long ago was beginning to trip her out. Besides, Violet wanted to check the place where her sister had died. Maybe...

She didn't look at Juliet then. Juliet knew all about Katie - could she have picked up on the fact that Violet had something she was looking for?

Violet ignored her and waited for Dan's response.

Charlotte Lewis

Charlotte looked from Daniel to Juliet to the little girl, who looked very pale. Daniel laughed when she asked if they were dead.

“No, we’re not dead,” he said. “At least not anymore.”

Charlotte’s eyes widened at that. Not anymore? That implied she had, indeed, been dead, didn’t it? She didn’t have much time to reflect on that as Daniel asked her how she was feeling.

“Tired,” she said. “Oh, I feel so tired…”

Her every bone and muscle ached and she felt like even turning her head would take too much energy for her to manage. The little girl whispered something to Juliet and Juliet made a quiet reply. Then Daniel told them her body had acclimated to the time frame. She wasn’t sure what time frame he meant. She hoped they weren’t stuck somewhere dreadful.

The little girl asked Daniel if he needed anything and, getting a good look at her, Charlotte realized she wasn’t so little. She pegged her at fourteen years old, give or take a few years. She herself had always looked young for her age.

“Are you okay?” Charlotte asked her. “You look as bad as I feel,” she said with a small laugh. “I’m sorry, but I don’t think I know your name… or, if I do I can’t manage to remember it.”

John Locke

John looked up at Shannon in surprise when she spoke. When he’d yelled out for assistance, she was the last person he’d expected to come to his aid. Though, he realized quickly it wasn’t his aid she was coming to. It was Charlie’s. She made that perfectly clear by avoiding John’s gaze and addressing everyone else but him.

Boone was a sacrifice the Island demanded…

That was what he’d been telling himself and everyone else since that boy had fallen from the plane. But he wasn’t sure he believed it himself. Ever since it happened he’d been feeling the weight of guilt. That kid had died because John hadn’t been able to do what needed to be done, so he’d led him to his death.

It was something he could excuse away all he wanted to, but he could never forgive himself for it. He didn’t expect Shannon to forgive him if he couldn’t forgive himself.

“My tent’s close,” Shannon said. “Maybe we could…”

John looked to Sydney as he helped Charlie to his feet. The man was unsteady and leaned on John as they began walking.

“You’re alright, Charlie,” Locke assured him. “You’re going to be fine.”

Shannon Rutherford

Shannon heard Miles calling after her, his words painful to hear, but she’d ignored them as best she could.

Asshole. What does he know? she thought.

But she just hated to admit he was probably right.

Shannon led the way to her tent, making sure the others were close behind her.

“So… What, you just decided a swim was a good idea?” she asked Charlie.

She wasn’t sure what he was doing in the ocean. She had heard he’d died, but she wasn’t sure how it had happened. She knew he’d drowned, but she didn’t know what the hell he was doing in the ocean in the first place.

Color seemed to be returning to Charlotte's cheeks, Violet noticed, but she couldn't help but jump out of her skin when Charlotte turned and looked at her. Up until now, she had kept her focus directly on Daniel, and who could blame her? She had just been dead, and had mysteriously come back to life. If it were Violet, she wouldn't be concerned with anything else that was going on. There would be too much else to process.

But Charlotte had looked right at her, her blue eyes taking her in. Violet immediately felt uncomfortable. She had never met Charlotte, not really. They had seen each other in passing, but they had never had a conversation. But then, Violet kept to herself mostly.

Suddenly, Charlotte spoke.

Are you okay?” Charlotte asked her. “You look as bad as I feel,” she said with a small laugh. “I’m sorry, but I don’t think I know your name… or, if I do I can’t manage to remember it." Violet swallowed. She couldn't help but feel a little strange. A woman who had just been dead was now talking to her. Violet didn't know how she was supposed to feel about all of this. This kind of stuff just didn't happen in real life. But then, this island had already proven to be mysterious and incredibly paranormal in different ways. She thought of Walt...her best friend. Wherever he was now, she knew he was okay. She could feel it, that had been the island's doing too.

"I'm...I'm Violet." She replied, noticing her voice was shaking. She realized she must be awful pale from passing out, but Charlotte wouldn't have known that. Not wanting to cause anymore stress, she simply nodded. "And I'm okay...I'm just-" what, she wondered. Weirded out that dead people were suddenly alive? Obsessing about her big sister who had died before her very eyes? Was she around here somewhere too? She wanted to find out, but for now, she faked a smile. "I'm okay."

Sydney frowned, but said nothing, as John pulled... well, as John pulled a John Locke and decided to completely dance around the question and assure Charlie that he'd tell him "what he could" about his little predicament... "later." She definitely wasn't fussy over how John had bitched out of answering the question, and she opened her mouth to speak, but she closed it again when she realized that the man was right about one thing: they did need to get Charlie away from the water. John started to help Charlie up, and Sydney assisted, at the same time answering his earlier question about Sydney, Australia, in the same way that one would impatiently answer an irritatingly curious child. "Yes, mate, that is definitely where we came from. Now, come on. Up you get."

Sydney couldn't help but be a little relieved at Charlie's quip about going for another swim. He was well enough to have a sense of humor, at least. He was just making his way to a stand when Shannon came over, answering John's call for someone to help the two of them with Charlie. She was another one that had done the Time Warp back to the world of the living. As the blonde suggested they take Charlie to her nearby tent, Sydney nodded. "Good plan."

It was a good idea, better than leaving Charlie where he was to get dragged back out to the ocean and drown all over again. Sydney tried to lighten things up as they started following Shannon to her tent - Charlie being alive was obviously good, but everyone seemed to be freaking out a little. Somewhat understandable, she guessed. "You can hardly blame him, really." She clarified, after a moment. "For looking like crap, I mean. It's the salt water - doesn't go well with his hair."

They were helping him through the tent's flaps when Shannon asked Charlie a question: “So… What, you just decided a swim was a good idea?” Sydney thought about it. Did Charlie come back to life and then somehow end up in the water, drowning? Or did he just have shitty luck, coming back to life in the middle of the ocean? Or did it have something to do with how he'd died, out in the water?

Daniel jumped as Violet spoke. He had become engrossed in watching Charlotte that he had forgotten that anyone else was there. The man looked up and over his shoulder at the young woman. “Uh,” he began in a quiet tone, but stopped as he thought, “Some water for Charlotte…please.”

He found that he could hardly speak. His voice sounded funny to his ears – too quiet, too hoarse, to graveled. Clearing his throat, Daniel hoped that the next time he spoke, his voice would be stronger and not quite as emotionally choked.

Hearing Charlotte speak, he turned his gaze back to the red haired woman. “It’ll be OK. You’re fine now,” he assured her, “The tiredness will go away. Everything will clear right up. Just give it a few minutes.“ He nodded as he spoke as well as watched Charlotte.

He looked up at Violet. The man cocked his head slightly to one side. “Huh,” he said, “I don’t think I know your name either. But, apparently you know me.” Daniel frowned as he looked back at Charlotte.

~*~*~

Charlie felt a snort form in the back of his throat, but he held it back. “If this is how I’m supposed to feel when I’m OK, then I really don’t want to know what perfect feels like,” Charlie retorted. He snapped his mouth closed and glared wearily at John.

He looked at Shannon. Seeing her standing there, talking to him, made his skin crawl. It made him nervous. Hearing her question, he blinked and shook his head as if to settle his nerve. “No. No, I didn’t think that. I’ll tell you guys in the tent,” he replied. His voice had dropped low and he did not make any eye contact. He wasn’t ashamed of what he had done. He was ashamed of what he hadn’t done and that was not get everyone off the island.

Hearing the response, Charlie looked at Sydney. He cocked an eyebrow and then shook his head. He didn’t feel like coming up with a comeback right then. He didn’t feel like doing much right then except get away from the bloody water.

His wish was granted and he soon found himself in Shannon’s tent. Charlie eased himself onto the make-shift bed. For a long while, he sat there in silence trying to gather his thoughts.

“I wasn’t just going for a swim,” he said slowly, “There’s an underwater station that Desmond and I went to. The phone system was blocked and that was the only place to fix it. The only way to get to it was to swim into it. I managed, barely, and entered the code. I spoke to…Penny….and then…..then it filled with water. Not Penny’s boat…. I wrote on my hand.” Charlie blinked. All the memoires flooding through his mind and jumbled together and caused him to shake.

Violet felt a smile on her lips when she heard Daniel talking to Charlotte. So much love laced his words, concern and care. She couldn't help but wonder to herself if her father had ever felt that way about her mother. No, that couldn't be true; if it were, her dad never would have left.

"I don’t think I know your name either. But, apparently you know me. Daniel had said. Violet shook her head.

"I...I just know your name. You know, from other people. We've never really met." She replied nervously, with a worried glance at Charlotte. "I'll go get her some water."

Luckily, Violet already had an empty water bottle with her, which she had taken with her on her walk. She knew where there was a stream nearby, and to be honest, she was glad for the distraction.

She began to head out, but she felt Juliet's hand on her arm, which caused Violet to cringe a little. Memories flooded over her from her time with the Others, when they had taken her right from the beach and held her against her will. Juliet had been a part of that too, and it made Violet angry to remember.

"Be careful, and be quick." Juliet warned. Violet didn't respond, she just pulled her arm away from Juliet and headed out into the depths of the jungle.

She was so used to walking through the jungle on her own, it came as second nature to her now, but this time was different. Two people who had been dead were now alive. The thought shook her and intrigued her. She thought of Charlie, who had drowned trying to rescue them all. How she missed him. They had been friends when he was alive. Was he a part of this? Was he alive somewhere? She thought of Boone and Shannon, a brother and sister from the beach who she had never really talked to, but attended their funerals. Were they alive too? But more than anybody else, Violet thought of Katie, her big sister who died upon impact on the island. Was she wandering around somewhere?

As she kept her eyes peeled for anything strange, she couldn't help but wonder if her sister would really be among those coming back to life. After all, she hadn't died on the island. She had died before the plane hit the ground. Would that make a difference? She wasn't sure.

Violet reached the stream and filled the water bottle, looking up and all around her for traces of shadows and movement. She wasn't sure if the Others were still roaming these parts of the island, but right now, she wasn't thinking about the Others. She was thinking about Katie.

She heard movement behind her, and she quickly stood, turning to face the direction the sound was coming from. Her eyes widened as she saw a tall figure with brown hair walking back into the jungle. It couldn't be, could it?

Katie...

Violet started chasing the strange figure.

Charlotte Lewis

The girl looked startled when Charlotte spoke to her, which made her feel slightly guilty. She hadn’t meant to disturb her further. She wondered how awful she must have looked.

“I… I’m Violet,” the girl replied in a shaky voice. “And I’m okay…I’m just –” She was thoughtful for a moment. “I’m okay,” she concluded.

Charlotte nodded.

“Violet. That’s a pretty name,” she said with a smile. “Oh, this must be just awful for you,” she said, as she realized Violet had probably seen her convulsing and bleeding, talking nonsense. “I’m so sorry if I’ve frightened you.”

She looked at Daniel, noticing he’d gone very quiet.

Oh, poor Daniel, she thought, giving him a pained expression without realizing it. I’m so sorry, Daniel.

Charlotte watched Violet leave to get her some water.

John Locke

John listened to the conversation as he, Sydney, and Shannon took Charlie to the tent. He was surprised that Shannon had stepped up to help, but he was also grateful.

Maybe if she can forgive you, you can forgive yourself.

The thought came to him suddenly and it startled him, for it wasn’t his own voice he heard, but Boone’s.

He was aware that the other four would want answers from him and he was already thinking through what he’d say. He’d have to explain why he was at the beach, explain to Charlie that he’d died.

Tell the truth, John. Haven’t you lied enough?

As they set Charlie down on the floor of the tent, again it was Boone’s voice he heard. Where was it coming from? He rubbed his face nervously with his hand and barely heard Charlie as he spoke.

Shannon Rutherford

Shannon frowned as Charlie looked away from her, answering her question in a low voice. What was up with that?

Oh, yeah. You were dead, she reminded herself.

Charlie adjusted himself onto one of the blankets. Shannon bit her lip, realizing she hadn’t thought to bring in the blanket from the beach. But, Charlie didn’t seem to mind using a smaller blanket and sand to lie on.

Shannon listened intently as Charlie explained he’d been in an underwater station with Desmond. Where the hell was Desmond, anyway? And what was he talking about, ‘not Penny’s boat’? What did that mean? Shannon gave Sydney a questioning look, wondering if she could piece together what Charlie was saying, then she looked at Locke, but he didn’t even appear to be listening.

Noticing Charlie had begun to shake, she hoped he wasn’t about to have a seizure. She so did not have the expertise to deal with that. Hoping it was the onset of a chill from the cold water, Shannon grabbed a sweatshirt from her laundry pile in the corner and wrapped it around his shoulders.

It wasn’t until she sat back and looked at him that she realized the shirt was Boone’s.

Violet's feet were getting tired, as she sped through the jungle as fast as she could, ignoring the burning pain that was beginning in her chest. She had never been much of a runner, in fact, any tremendous amount of physical exertion was bad for her, according to her doctors. Right now, she could care less. She swore she saw her sister right before her very eyes. If she was alive, if she was somewhere in this jungle, she had to find her.

Violet had lost sight of the figure almost as soon as she had disappeared behind some trees, but Violet wasn't about to give up that easily. But she couldn't figure out why her sister wouldn't come to her; especially with Violet screaming her name so desperately. What was going on?

Violet could feel her heartrate quickening with each stride she took, but she would not stop. If Charlotte was alive...Katie had to be, didn't she?

Violet began to cough as she ran through some more trees, yelling for her sister, until her foot caught hold of a loose tree root and down she went, face first.

It took her a minute to regain her bearings, as she hoisted herself up to her knees, feeling the fresh blood forming on her forehead and forearms. She groaned, still feeling a tight chest and sore muscles. Frustration overwhelmed her then, she felt hopeless. She would never find her sister out here.

It was then that she heard rustling bushes and looked up to see Juliet emerging. Violet turned away, but Juliet closed in on her.

"What happened?" She asked, taking Violet's arm in her own to examine the cuts. Violet pulled away.

"Nothing." She lied, pulling herself to her feet. Juliet shook her head.

"This isn't the way to the stream. I thought you were getting water." She pointed out.

"I am, I mean I was, I just-"

"I heard you yelling."

"What?"

"I heard you yelling." Juliet paused. "Who's Katie?"

Violet felt a bubble in her throat, it was keeping her from breaking down. She only lifted her head and turned away.

"No one." She reached down and picked up the water bottle. "Let's just get Charlotte some water."

The walk back to where Daniel and Charlotte were waiting was silent, and Violet couldn't help but wonder if she had been seeing things all along. If Katie really were alive, she would have heard Violet's screaming and wouldn't have hesitated for a second in finding her little sister. Violet longed for that to happen; for Katie, the only family she had had left, to be alive, and here in this place.

But maybe, Violet reasoned, she was just not allowed to experience happiness.

They arrived back and Violet handed the water bottle to Daniel, ignoring the glances Juliet kept giving her, and realizing that both Daniel and Charlotte were looking up at Violet and the fresh cuts and bruises, no doubt wondering how in the world a trip for water could have resulted in such a mess.

Daniel couldn’t take his eyes off Charlotte. He couldn’t believe his eyes. He hoped, no he prayed, that this all wasn’t a dream. Tentatively, he reached out to stroke her face or her hair, but pulled his hand in, afraid that all of this would go away if he touched her.

Seeing the look on her face, he frowned. “Charlotte,” he said slowly, “Are you all right? Does anything hurt?”

He looked up as Violet came back. He cocked an eyebrow when he saw how dirty and bloodied up she was. “Are you sure,” he asked, taking the bottle of water, “Thanks.” He held it up to Charlotte’s mouth so that she could drink from it.

Charlie rubbed his forehead as he tried to make since of the memories that flashed before his eyes. He tried to come to terms with the fact he hadn’t got them off here, as he had hoped, but was finding it was difficult. He felt guilty. “I’m sorry,” he blurted, looking up at each of them, “I wanted to get you all off this island and back home. That was what was supposed to happen when I went down there. I would call this ship and the group would rescue you.”

He sat there, shivering from being cold and regret, listening to the waves crashing as well as listening to the people on the beach. There didn’t seem to be as many and there were a few distinct voices mixing with the din of the beachgoers. “Where’s Claire and Aaron,” he asked, “Did Desmond get back?”

He looked at Shannon and took the sweatshirt from her. “Thanks, mate,” he said slipping it over his head.

“Locke, Sydney, could either of you please back me up here? You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? Penny…Des…the underwater station….the bloody button,” he asked. It was more like begged. They had to understand.

"And Locke, tell me what happened to me! Why is Shannon here? She was shot down! What is going on. Tell me," Charlie demanded.

Violet was trying her best to ignore the burning scratches all over her body, pretend like she didn't notice the blood dripping from them. She was also trying her best to pretend as though she hadn't just seen her dead sister running around through the jungle. She started to wonder if she was going crazy...

But then again, Dan and Charlotte were right in front of her. They had been dead too.

Violet breathed out, craning her neck back toward the jungle. Maybe she'd catch a glimpse of her again.

Daniel took the water bottle from her then; Violet jumped a little, as she hadn't been paying attention, and she noticed Daniel's eyes linger a little, no doubt wondering what kind of trouble she could possibly get into, just getting water.

Violet watched with a sad feeling rising up inside of her when she watched Daniel help Charlotte with the water. They had been reunited, both thinking they had lost the other for good. Violet felt tears sting her eyes as she thought of Katie, her sister. Would it...could it happen to her too?

She cleared her throat.

"Um, Daniel?" She asked, breaking the silence. "What...I mean, how...what happened?"

She only hoped Daniel would know what she was talking about. She didn't exactly know how to word how are you alive when you're supposed to be dead?
