General Rules - Must Read « Thread Started on Sept 19, 2007, 12:11am »
You are expected to know and understand what is written here. Ignorance of the rules is not an acceptable defense.
1. Respect one another. You probably won't like every player here, but I will not allow heated, nasty arguments, name-calling or public flaming. If this happens, you'll be BANNED. If you find yourself in a situation that you cannot resolve privately and peaceably, bring it to the Staff.
2. We like to think this is an above average writing environment with above average writers. So, to prove we are Above average, no post should be less than 300 characters or two full paragraphs. This does not include reverberations of the postings of other members. If you copy and paste someone else's dialog into your post, that addition does not add to your total.
Let me tell you why this is a rule. Being descriptive in fictional settings is really important. In any good story, the characters are the primary focus. Every post you make should be filled with your character's thoughts, actions, and perceptions... and all new scenery should be described in detail. If you are to achieve in these goals, its impossible to write less than two (2) full paragraphs. Now, we may be lenient on this rule, if a post is really well written and you don't make a habit of it... however, you should never expect that we will be.
So remember, it's not a competition to see who can get the highest post count. What matters most is getting longer, more detailed or interesting posts.
3. Use the resources provided to you by the board.
Spell Check. Since we are striving to be at minimum, above average, tons of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes will be frowned upon. This rule is more for the person you are writing with than for anyone else. It is hard to get into a reply when you can barely make out what you are replying to. We have this nifty little tool called Spell Check. Use it!(Many people make their posts first in a Word Processor with spell check, then once they get rid of all those little colorful squiggly lines, they copy and paste. Works well for many, and if you have problems with grammar it might work well for you.)
Every post you make should be read over at least once before being posted. If it ever becomes painfully obvious that you don't care about your post quality, you will be warned, and then banned. We don't ask for perfection, but we do ask that you try.
Bookmarks. Remember that as you get busier in the game, it's easy to leave threads unfinished by forgetting about them. This handy feature can send you notifications when a thread in which you are role playing is updated and requires your attention. I highly recommend using this feature. Just go into your profile, then "bookmarks" to modify how you receive updates.
4. Don't start a story that is basically a fan fic of your character and close the thread so that only you are posting in it. If you need to create a back story for your made-up character, put the information in the character bio, or if you want it to be in a thread, ask someone to join and rp with you to develop it. Generally speaking, the show characters already have back-stories, so don't rewrite another.
5. Don't abuse the Karma System. If you like a post or the writing performance of another player, exalt them. If you dislike how another player has written or played their hero, you can smite them, however send them a PM (of friendly, constructive criticism) so they understand what they have done wrong and may improve.
6. Try to post as often as you can. Once a week, at the bare minimum. More than 2 weeks and your character will be considered inactive.
7. If you're going away, sign the Away Sheet, so we know you'll be gone and when to expect you back. (If you know you're getting ready to leave on vacation, don't join several threads and then leave other players hanging.) Also, be sure to give someone permission to post for you so everyone is not left waiting if it's going to be more than a week.
8. Each member is to have only one account. Trying to subvert this rule will result in Banination! If there is more than one member of your family role playing as a member of this site and using the same IP address, let the admin know. (This rule is here to keep anyone from having many accounts and grabbing many canons, in effect keeping new members from having the opportunity for a main character.)
9. No more than two canons are to be played buy any single player. This is to keep us from dying if a player leaves the forum for any reason, thus diminishing the site and fun for other players.
10. If a member is inactive for one month, then their account will be deleted. Any Canon not played within 1 week of being accepted will be placed back on the list. Any canon not played in two weeks thereafter will be put back on the list. If there is an extenuating circumstance that you think is a viable exception, PM the admin and she will determine based on that information. Don't wait to do this after the account has been deleted. (Anything deleted cannot be recovered.)
11. Do not write for another person's character (see definition of god modding). Only write your own thoughts, actions, facial expressions, etc..
12. If you need a specific character in your thread, PM and ask them to join. If no one plays that character and it is only a brief appearance required, PM a staff member and see if god-modding this one time for this one character would be appropriate.
13. If a Canon character is needed in a thread, but we have no one playing them on the site, you may also ask someone else to play that person for that thread.
14. You can be in more than one thread at once. You can also be in more than one place at once. You don't have to follow a strict, streaming time line. You may have threads taking place in a different time, as in threads in the past, or in the future. Generally this happens when you are still finishing one thread but are needed or invited to another thread. Try not to put yourself in too many places at once though, as it can becoming confusing for you and others.
15. You're character may be a canon, but that doesn't mean he/she can't be hurt. Everyone has a weakness, so make it somewhat real if you fight or get victimized. (New applications password: Vincent)
16. All avatars and signatures must be respectful and generally modest, as well as within reasonable size limits (600 x 300 pixels max on signature images).
17. There is to be no posts that exceed the agreement by ProBoards.
If you don't understand a rule listed here, please PM a staff member for further explanation.
